Leptin is a 167 amino acids protein secreted almost exclusively by adipose tissue. Leptin is his livestock guardian reducing fat deposits (ectopy) in organs.
Leptin plasma level is closely correlated to the subject’s fat mass. So it is an indicator almost as reliable as DEXA (Dual Energy X Absorption).
On the contrary, leptin is pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidant, promotes tissue proliferation activity and is one of the cancer/obesity causal link mediators.
It plays an important key role in ponderostat in :
- Reducing appetite through hypothalamic POMC neurons activation producing satiety
- Increasing energy expenditure through two mechanisms : central, by a rapid release of TRH (Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone)/TSH(Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and by SNS activation (Sympathetic Nervous System), and peripheral, stimulating fat oxidation in muscles and organs
